On the way to Chamberlain Hill, Amber passed by several vandalized buildings, many looted shops and countless civilians who crowded the streets after the HRC malfunction. The flurry of the city had come to a standstill. Even police officers who tried to take control of the situation appeared confused and defeated. The longer this goes on, Amber realized, the more of a mess we will be in.

In contrast to the chaos a few blocks away, Chamberlain Hill was quiet when Amber arrived, carrying the poison and the glove. Paul did not greet her at the gate, and Delia did not answer when she knocked on the front door. The only person she saw on the grounds was the resident chef, Micah, who had arrived at the same time she did but entered through the back of the house without so much as a wave in her direction.

He must not have seen me, Amber thought.

She tried the front door and was surprised to find it unlocked.

“Delia?” She entered with caution. “Ansel?”

No response.

Where is everybody?

She walked to the stairs, extra alert from the adrenaline pumping through her veins. Now was her chance…

With a deep breath, she squeezed the railing and stepped onto the carpeted stairs.

She was not yet halfway to the second floor when Delia came waddling down. “Well, hello, dear! You gave me a fright!” Delia looked utterly taken aback.

“I’m sorry, Delia,” Amber explained right away, “I let myself in when nobody came to answer the door.”

“Well, it has been a busy morning. Have you heard about the glitch at the HRC?” Delia directed a slightly disappointed Amber back down the stairs.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know exactly, but about half an hour ago, the chip implants stopped working. Korpora’s entire tagged population got cut off from the HRC. Currently, I don’t know what’s going on or when it will be fixed!”

“Is Ansel here?”

“Oh, no! He left for the HRC as soon as the connection was severed. The State needs his help to fix the issue. He was in such a hurry, he left his—” Delia stopped herself, glancing down at a small leather pouch in her hand. “Never mind. Amber, I’m so sorry. I must leave you alone here for a while. You think you’ll be alright?”

Amber could not believe her luck. “Yes, Delia, don’t worry about me.”

The old Sumrect paused at the grand entrance and assured Amber with a smile. “I should be quick. Stay in the house and do not go anywhere else. With everybody untagged, who knows what it’s like out there?”

“When will you be back?”

“Oh, he’s not too far away… I should be back in an hour.”

Plenty of time. Amber nodded. “I’ll check in Ansel’s office to see if he left me with anything to do.”

“Sure, my dear.” Delia squeezed her shoulder before she said her goodbye and left through the front door.

Must be getting to her glider. Amber thought, watching Delia disappear around the house.

She stuck her hand into her dress pocket where she felt the rough chain glove and smooth glass vial.
